I take my leave and find Bast leaning against the wall beside the doorway, arms crossed and his usual grin taking up residence on his face.

I narrow my eyes. “What are you doing here?”

“Waiting for you.” He stands up straight and his grin disappears. “Uh, Blake and I had a run-in with Jax this morning and he may have told us what happened between you guys.” He scrapes his foot across the floor.

I roll my eyes. “Wonderful.”

I wince at the curtness in my tone. I don’t want to push Bast away too. Guild, I’m rebuilding my walls and I don’t know if that’s what’s best for me.

“Don’t worry,” he says, “I don’t want to know any of the details. Blake had to leave for a mission, but I’m here for support, if you need me.”

“Blake told you to babysit me, didn’t she.” It’s hardly a question.

His face reddens and he shifts his weight from foot to foot. “Well, uh...those weren’t her exact words...”

I raise an eyebrow and give him my best assassin stare.

He shifts his eyes to anywhere but me and after a few more seconds of silence, he cracks. “Yeah, basically that’s what she said, but she means well by it.”

I roll my eyes again. “Oh, I’m sure, but we’re going to have a few words the next time I see her.”

“Fine by me,” he replies. “So how’d the meeting go?”

“It went well. I didn’t kill anybody and Stage Two is currently in development.”

“Nice job,” he says, smiling. “What’s Stage Two?”

“We’re going to bomb that food warehouse Ajax and I found, cut off the Guild’s food supply to weaken them from the outside in. I expect swift retaliation though.”

“That’s actually not a bad plan. All your idea, I’m guessing?”

“Of course, but Jenson won’t let me help any further.”

Bast frowns. “I don’t know what he has against you.”

I look away from him as I answer, towards the door to the council room. Behind it, Jenson and the others carry on without me, as if I was never there. “In his eyes, I’m still the enemy,” I reply, “and I doubt that’ll ever change.”

“Maybe, but don’t worry about it. You’re not here to impress him or be his friend. Hey, speaking of friends, what do you say we go have some fun?”

“Like what?”

“It’s a surprise.”

I narrow my eyes. “Should I be worried?”

He grins. “Terrified. You go back to your room and get changed into something less... oh, I don’t know, doom and gloom.”

I scowl at that, but he doesn’t seem to notice.

“Oh, and do us all a favour,” he adds. “Try to resist the urge to bring any weapons. I’ll meet you outside your room in a minute.”

“Where are you going?”

“I have to get changed too; I can’t go to this place with my mission clothes still on.”

“Can’t you tell me anything about where we’re going and what we’re going to be doing there?”

“Not a chance, Night,” he says, “a little bit of a surprise will do you good.”

He disappears down the hall, leaving me standing there utterly bewildered.
